Assembly took 2-3 hours. Instructions were fairly clear (with a couple oddly worded/misleading steps). But the first time we used the machine, we were very pleasantly surprised! Feels very smooth, sturdy, and quiet! The only real fault: the tension knob is hard to turn, and hard to interpret... I envisioned "1-10" settings; but it appears to show "1," "1...4" etc. (Ranges, rather than specific number settings. Odd.)But overall, and so far, RECOMMENDED!Day 2: Computer/Timer stopped cycling/working. Contacted Paradigm, and I'm confident they will help. (Their site is rather gorgeous.)Update: Paradigm failed to answer my online trouble ticket. Finally reached them by phone. Performed several troubleshooting tasks - one involved opening the cabinet, verifying magnetic sensor alignment. Not fun. And failed. So, they had me ship it back via Amazon. Not fun tearing the thing down again, repackaging. Amazon did well - they are world-class for a reason.Because the machine lasted 1 day, I'm dropping my rating to 1 star.

After a month I finally got to put this thing together and after 20 rotations the foot bar came off the crank - just slipped right off. Not broke. Called the company and they were speechless. I think the rep had never heard of this before but he was extremely kind. They are sending out 2 new cranks and 2 new bolts and hopefully that will solve the problem. Hoping it's not a design flaw. Once I get it all set up, I'm sure I'll be giving it 5 stars. It's whisper quiet and the stride is just right for my height - i'm 5'6". Very solid, easy to put together but the instructions got me confused twice. You'll need a second hand at least twice. Easy to get on and off. Has a place for your tablet and water bottle. Defintiely made the right decision. Just cant wait for the parts to get here so I can fix it! Until then, it's only getting 3 stars.

I've put about 36 miles on this so far in the past 4 months and I am very pleased with the quality and stride of this elliptical. I tested a number of larger units by Schwinn, Sole, Precor and others, but I liked the stride on this much better - more like cross country skiing in a flat profile where some of the others had more of a downward pitch and a bulky feel. Simple controls, but more than adequate for a good workout. The compact size is nice too - easy to move, yet heavy enough to be very stable when using it. Good design and nicely made. Take your time assembling it (very well packed) and you should have a good experience. The only caveat is to be sure there is no grease in the rear bolt holes that attach the bottom foot arms to the flywheel transmission - just check with a cotton swab. Bolts come with LockTite on them, but I had one side that came undone quickly while using the machine. After cleaning out the bolt hole with rubbing alcohol, the bolt never came loose again. So check while assembling first and you will have a worry free machine.

Product Description

It’s not every day that you run into an elliptical fitness machine packing features only seen in ellipticals on the higher end of the price range. A few years ago, that would not have been possible but with the entry of machines like the Exerpeutic 4000 Elliptical trainer, you stand to see so much packed into a tiny space coming at a very affordable price.

Resistance and incline

This machine utilizes a computer integrated magnetic tension resistance. What this means is that the magnetic brake pad has been linked to the tension knob with the help of a solid wire so as to enables the distance between the pad and flywheel to be adjusted thus altering the tension. To adjust the machine’s 14 levels of resistance, you only need to tap the controls on the console. Unlike the others in its category, you don’t need an electric outlet to power it as it’s powered by batteries.

Exerpeutic 4000 packs an adjustable incline which allows a user to increase the intensity of their workout for a rigorous exercise. Intense workouts are a perfect way to spend less time to achieve so much. However, the machine lacks advanced incline settings so common with high-end ellipticals, which makes it a lightweight machine.

Console unit

Exerpeutic 4000 doesn’t pack so much on its console but what it’s able to deliver is pretty everything you will love to see in a budget elliptical trainer. On its LCD display, you can keep track of various workout data, including:

  • Distance
  • Time elapsed
  • Speed
  • Revolutions per minute
  • Pulse rate

Also included on the console is an adjustable latch that helps to securely keep your devices such as smartphones or tablets safe.  This feature is enhanced further by the presence of a gel pad.  Not forgetting to mention the water bottle holder and heart rate monitor.

Build quality/ Design

Many of us will always be tempted to associate the low price of this machine or low weight (84lbs) with a poor build quality but that’s not the case with Exerpeutic 4000 Elliptical trainer.  Its frame and other metallic parts are largely made of steel and the encasing of the drive system made of solid plastic.

Looking at the design, the machine is specially engineered and comes in a slim design which besides making it a space saver, also helps in ensuring a smooth and natural stride motion. Another aspect is the 3-piece cranking system which is not only durable but strong enough to ensure a great performance and consistent momentum.

For the drive system, you have a double transmission drive system operated with 2 flywheels and a 2 belt design system. Unlike what you will experience with other ellipticals that pack a single flywheel, for this machine, you will have increased momentum and a striding motion that is far smoother.

Exerpeutic 4000 also comes in a compact design that helps to cut down the overall size and length of the elliptical machine.

Transport wheels have also fixed on the front end so as to make it easier to move the machine around.

Comfort

Comfort on this machine is enhanced by several features. Top amongst them is the 18″ smooth elliptical stride length which enables not only a full range but also a comfortable workout that is without any strain on your ankles and knees.

With its dual action handlebars, you have the chance to experience a full body workout while your heart rate gets recorded with the heart rate sensors installed on the stationary handlebars.

Stepping on and off this machine is a pretty easy task, thanks to its 6″ off the ground distance.  Your feet have also been well taken care of with the large stride pedals that ensure they don’t slip off as you work out.  Having a long distance between the pedals also ensures that your inner thighs are not subjected to strain.

Assembly and Warranty

Putting together the Exerpeutic 4000 elliptical machine is a fairly easy task. On top of the comprehensive manual, you have been supplied with the tools so as to make the process of assembling the machine easy and fast. One thing to note is that even though the instructional manual doesn’t state it, you need to grease the machine’s joints as you assemble it so as to be from any noises that may emerge while you work out. On average, the entire process shouldn’t take any longer than one hour.

When it comes to the warranty, here’s what they have:

  • Frame- 1-year warranty
  • Parts-90 day warranty

As for the maximum user weight capacity, the machine can take up to 270 lbs.

Alternatives

In its category, Exerpeutic 4000 Elliptical trainer continues to face tough competition from the popular budget elliptical machines. Exerpeutic 5000, its sister model, is one of its closest rival and alternative.

Even though they  have a few similar  features like the 3-piece cranking system, stride length, and user weight capacity, Exerpeutic 5000 has far more advanced features like the Mobile Tracking App technology and Bluetooth connectivity, and also more resistance levels and workout options which give it an edge over Exerpeutic 4000. The two are just a few dollars apart and so at a quick glance, one will likely go for Exerpeutic 5000.

Another very close alternative is the Schwinn 430. The two are a few hundred dollars apart which is perhaps explained by the fact that Schwinn 430 packs more workout programs, resistance levels, and additional features like online connectivity, USB charging port, DualTrack two LCD display amongst others. However, both are strong, durable and able to deliver a smooth and natural workout.
